Why CORSIA-Grade Carbon Credits Command a Premium

CORSIA-eligible credits cost noticeably more than generic voluntary credits — and buyers pay it on purpose. The eligibility filters, corresponding adjustments and scarcity that create the premium, and when it’s worth paying.

Put a CORSIA-eligible credit and a generic voluntary credit side by side and the price gap is obvious — the CORSIA-grade unit costs more, sometimes several times more. That premium is not a markup for the label; it is the market pricing in real scarcity and integrity. Understanding why it exists tells you when it is worth paying.

The Premium Is an Eligibility Filter

A CORSIA-eligible credit has passed through filters that most voluntary credits never face. It must come from a crediting programme ICAO has approved, meet the eligibility criteria, fall in the right vintage window, and — for the first phase — carry a corresponding adjustment. Each filter removes supply. What is left is a smaller, higher-quality pool, and scarcity of the good stuff is what moves price.

The Four Drivers of the Premium

Driver Why it lifts the price
Programme approval Only ICAO-approved programmes qualify
Corresponding adjustment Host-country authorisation is hard to get
Scarcity Few units clear every filter
Compliance demand Airlines must buy, adding steady pull

The corresponding adjustment is often the decisive one. Not every host country will authorise it — some prefer to keep the reduction for their own national target — so authorised, adjusted supply is structurally short against demand, as covered in Article 6.

Why Buyers Pay It Willingly

For a serious buyer, the premium buys three things a cheap credit cannot: an integrity signal (it cleared a strict standard), protection against double counting (the corresponding adjustment), and audit resilience (a claim that survives scrutiny). For anyone whose climate claims will be examined — by a regulator, a customer, or an auditor — that is cheap insurance against a far more expensive reputational problem. It is also why CORSIA-grade units overlap so heavily with what the ICVCM Core Carbon Principles demand.

When It Is Worth Paying — and When It Is Not

The premium is not always necessary. For a low-stakes gesture, a well-rated ordinary voluntary credit may do the job at lower cost. The premium earns its keep when the claim matters: a compliance obligation, a high-profile net-zero statement, or a purchase you will have to defend. Match the credit's pedigree to the weight of the claim, and the premium becomes a rational spend rather than an overpay — the corporate-buyer logic in can companies buy CORSIA-eligible credits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do CORSIA-eligible credits cost more? Because eligibility filters — programme approval, corresponding adjustment, vintage — remove most supply, leaving a scarce, higher-integrity pool that compliance demand competes for.

What is the corresponding adjustment premium? The extra value of a credit whose host country has authorised it and deducted the tonnes from its own total, preventing double counting; such authorised supply is scarce.

Is a CORSIA-grade credit always worth the premium? Not always — for low-stakes offsetting a good voluntary credit may suffice; the premium is worth it when the claim must be defended.

Do prices vary between CORSIA-eligible credits? Yes — project type, vintage and integrity still create a range within the eligible pool.

Who sets which programmes are CORSIA-eligible? ICAO, based on assessments by its Technical Advisory Body, publishes the approved programmes and criteria.
